Scope

The focus of this course is on learning the fundamentals of networking. In this course, you will learn both the practical and conceptual skills that build the foundation for understanding basic networking. First, you will examine human versus network communication and see the parallels between them. Next, you will be introduced to the two major models used to plan and implement networks: OSI and TCP/IP. You will gain an understanding of the layer approach to networks and examine the OSI and TCP/IP layers in detail to understand their functions and services. You will become familiar with the various network devices, network addressing schemes and, finally, the types of media used to carry data across the network.

This is the first course in a 4 course sequence designed to give you a through grounding in networking and also prepare you to take to CCNA examination.

Policies

Cheating/Plagiarism is a very strict no-no. If you are caught, you will fail. Simple. If you do not understand a topic, ask your instructor in class. Don't be shy, it is likely that others are having difficulty too. If you are not satisfied that you understand the topic, talk to me after class. If after you go home and re-read the notes, but are still have difficulties, try to narrow in on the the specific area where you are having trouble, then come during office hours with a clear question. If the topic is still not clear (and there are more than one such student) we will go over it in class. Under no circumstances cheat or plagiarize, it is just not worth it.

As per univeristy policy attendance is compulsary, unless you have a excuse approved by the provost's office or me.

If you have any special needs, please let me know as soon as possible. We will do all we can to accomodate you.

We will not have class on Monday, Sep 1rd 2008, Labor day.
